30 Bays in 30 Days

We are delighted to confirm that the event will be held again this year and we hope that as many people as possible will register to swim a minimum of 30 strokes in 30 bays from the list below. It all takes place between 1 and 30 July. So, pick your favourite 30 Bays from the list below or if you want an extra challenge swim them all, the choice is yours. Don’t worry if you can’t fit it all in during July – please carry on swimming in August so you can tick those bays off your list.

There will be organised swims to open and close the month long event and everyone who registers will be invited along to participate. But between those swims, you can decide where and when you swim to complete the challenge. We’ll also be promoting some impromptu swims during the month for people who’d like to get together during the week, rather than swimming alone. Keep an eye on our social media pages for more information.

We would encourage everyone to come along and get involved in the group swims to start and close the event; it’s guaranteed to be a great atmosphere. After that, you are free to swim the bays in whichever order you like, whenever you like between 1 and 30 July. You don’t have to swim every day if you don’t want to!

If you’re going to be off the Island or life is just too busy, then you can swim in more than one bay on the days that you have more time; it can be as flexible as you need it to be. If you aren’t a strong swimmer, you’ll be relieved to hear that you only have to swim a minimum of 30 strokes in each bay, not the whole thing so please sign up.

Maybe make an afternoon of walking from bay to bay to tick a few off or plan a couple of coastal swims with friends or family, followed by a picnic or BBQ? It’s all about creating great memories and enjoying the summer fun.

We are lucky to have so many amazing places to swim off Jersey, although some places may present a challenge to get to. If you would like to get involved, but think that you will be unable to swim at every bay on the list, you are free to choose which bays work for you, to complete 30 swims at those to complete the challenge.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”animate_css animated fadeInUp”]1. Please don’t let this put you off from signing up to the event though, as we would much rather you were able to join in and enjoy the experience, than miss out. If you are feeling brave on a warm day, you could always try a few swims without the wet-suit. Hopefully, the sea will be getting warmer by July!

WHERE ARE THEY?

If you haven’t heard of some of these bays before or want to remind yourself how to get to them, we’ve written a little booklet. It includes a map with a rough location for the bays, a description of what they’re like and if they have any facilities nearby (such as refreshments and toilets). Just print it off as a booklet and tick off those bays throughout the month.

Visit Jersey also offer a guide to some of the beaches : Jersey beach guide link from Visit Jersey

WHEN IS BEST TO SWIM WHERE?

Some of the bays are equally enjoyable to swim at any time of day or state of tide, but others definitely have an optimum tide to experience it at its best.

It will also mean that on the days when you may not have anyone to swim with, you can get hold of someone you know who has signed up or you can put a shout out though our social media pages for a swim buddy.

Opening Swim

The opening swim takes place on at 10.30 on Sunday 1 July, at St Brelade’s Bay.

As well as being able to meet up with fellow swimmers, you will be handed your fab swimming hat, kindly proved by our sponsor Network Insurance & Financial Planning.

Safety cover will be provided.

Closing swim

The closing swim takes place on at 10.00 on Sunday 29 July, also at St Brelade’s Bay. This is an opportunity to celebrate completing the challenge and sharing experiences with fellow swimmers.

Last year, over 100 people came along to the swims, which made for a fantastic atmosphere. To make it easier for the lifeguards to spot you, we ask that you all wear the logo’d swimming hat to these group swims. This will be yours to keep so please remember to bring it along to the last group swim and feel free to wear throughout the event.

This year we are teaming up with the Plastic Free Coastline campaign run by charity Surfers Against Sewage. The local community leader will be at our opening and closing swims to show how we can help to keep Jersey’s coastline plastic free.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row font_color=”#17a8a2″ css=”.vc_custom_1401743087936{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 90px !important;}” id=”yourmoney”][vc_column][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1401716830837{padding-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 60px !important;}”][vc_column_inner][vc_willow_big_title title=”Where your money will go”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Jersey Hospice Care and The National Trust for Jersey are delighted to be working together to co-ordinate the 30 Bays in 30 Days initiative.

With the ever increasing number of charities competing for the same funds, as well as an abundance of physical challenges and events taking place, we decided to work together to raise awareness of our charities and encourage islanders to get involved with fundraising and, at the same time, encourage the benefits of sea swimming.

Jersey Hospice Care

Many people think that hospices are places of sadness focused on death and dying. In fact our focus is on living and living well right up to the end, making memories and spending time with your family.

Our care is about so much more than the specialist palliative treatment of a person’s physical symptoms. It’s a total philosophy of care, offering spiritual and emotional support that extends to family members and carers. For each person we are privileged to care for, we only get one chance at the end of life to get it right and that’s why we strive every day to go that extra mile for our patients and their families, to make extraordinary care our ‘ordinary’. Helping each person we care for, to get the best out of every day and to make each day count.

We couldn’t do this without the generosity of our local community and the support of our amazing volunteers.

2018 is set to be an exciting year for Jersey Hospice Care, as we begin the journey to expand our services to care for children and young people with a life shortening or life threatening condition and their families.

The National Trust for Jersey

The National Trust for Jersey is an independent charitable organisation, which permanently protects and cares for over 1,500 vergées of land, 19,000 metres of footpath and 29 historic buildings for the benefit of the Island. Established in 1936, the Trust is totally self-funding; it currently costs £2,500 per day to run the organisation.

With a small staff of 17 employees, the Trust not only maintains and manages its estate, but is also a key part of the Island’s cultural life. Every year, it organises an extensive range of family events, including Sunset Concerts, Black Butter making and educational activities, such as Bug Safaris and Rockpool Rambles.

We are delighted to help arrange the 30 Bays in 30 Days fundraiser with Jersey Hospice Care and hope that this event will reinforce the beauty of Jersey’s Coastline and why it is in everyone’s interest to try and protect it.

  • A fun and different way of making the most of living on our beautiful Island of Jersey.
  • The feeling of having achieved something in the summer rather than it just flying by.
  • Visiting new places you’ve never been to before or haven’t visited for years.
  • Sea swimming makes you feel alive and loving life!

  • The challenge runs between Sunday 1 July and Tuesday 31 July. It would really help the organisation of the event if you could register as soon as possible; ideally before 30 June (see the How? Section for details). Registrations will be accepted at the first group swim, but it may get busy, so it is recommend that you register in advance.
  • Swim before work, lunchtimes, daytime, after work, before a picnic tea, by moonlight………..basically anytime you can fit it in. Be organised with your swim stuff, keep it in the car or in your ruck sack, and within the time it would have taken you to make and drink a cuppa you will have ticked another bay swim off the list.
  • Every swim will be different depending on the tides, weather, who you’re with, time of day……..the list goes on. So what are you waiting for – jump in this July!

Dealing with a Weaver Fish sting

Weaver Fish are normally found around the low tide mark. These small fish raise sharp needles on their backs in self-defence if trodden on and these can be extremely painful. Place the affected area in water as hot as you can stand. Test the water first so as not to scald the person who has been stung.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”667″ img_size=”full” css_animation=”animate_css animated fadeIn”][vc_column_text]

Dealing with a Jellyfish sting

Do not rub the affected area but remove the remains of any tentacle if present. Lightly spray or slowly pour sea water over the area and apply a cold compress if available. Watch for severe and/or life threatening symptoms such as confusion, check pain or weakness – seek emergency medical attention immediately.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1401747794748{padding-bottom: 90px !important;}” id=”sponsorship”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”729″ img_size=”full” css_animation=”animate_css animated fadeIn”][vc_column_text]
